SUMMARY:CIVICA - "Students’ Reflections on Using Artificial Intelligence in Written Assignments"
DESCRIPTION:“Students’ Reflections on Using Artificial Intelligence in Written Assignments” \nDr Krista Lepik will present her study on how students reflect on the usability of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in terms of searching\, evaluating and presenting information. This approach is particularly interesting because it is based on users’ practices. \nShe will focus on the benefits and problems of using AI chatbots in the writing process from the students’ point of view. The study is based on reflective assignments submitted by 34 students and an analysis of the following practices: \n\nClose reading;\nOpen coding (semantic level);\nExtraction of the ‘key’ theme at the semantic level;\nDesigning and refining the thematic map; and\,\nWriting the report/paper.\n\nSuggested preparation before the event: \nEthan Mollick and Lilach Mollick\, “Practical AI for Teachers and Students” – https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwRdpYzPkkn302_rL5RrXvQE8j0jLP02j. This is an introductory series of five short videos on the use of generative AI for students and teachers. \nTuesday 12 December 2023    11:30-12:30 CET \nRegister here \n

SUMMARY:CIVICA Research Open Science for the Social Sciences Seminars - Promoting your research: what you need to know
DESCRIPTION:Promoting your research: what you need to know \nIn a competitive research environment\, publishing is not enough anymore. You have to make your research accessible\, findable and visible. Your online identity is the central key for your career and your recognition\, particularly for young researchers. This session will help you to build your online research profile by applying best practices. You will learn how to evaluate your online identity and promote your work by using the tools best suited to your needs. A special focus on ORCID will be presented. \nThursday  30 November 2023   11:00-12:00CET \nRegister here \n

DESCRIPTION:Generative AI Tools in Higher Education: \nDisruptors and Innovators? A Virtual Forum \nIn this webinar\, two academic librarians will share how generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT are disrupting and innovating library services\, especially information literacy. How should librarians think about the roles of library instruction and information literacy when it comes to artificial intelligence? What are some opportunities and challenges in teaching generative AI tools in library instruction? This virtual forum will explore these questions and learning resources for librarians to consider. Bring your questions and thoughts to this interactive session! \nMonday\, November 27\, 2023 \n16:30 Spain \nRegister here

SUMMARY:CIVICA Research Open Science for the Social Sciences Seminars - Making a Start on Developing Open History
DESCRIPTION:Making a Start on Developing Open History \nOf all the humanities and social sciences disciplines\, perhaps the most resistant so far to ‘open science’ ideas has been history\, especially where scholarship has been based on skilled archival research and the sources involved are not digitized. Yet Dr Anton Howes has argued that the time has come for a far greater opening up of history to open science and open social science methods in order: \n\nTo enhance the reproducibility of historical ‘facts’;\nTo encourage the far greater digitization of sources; and\,\nTo make knowledge of archival data more accessible to a wider range of readers (going beyond just experts in archival work) in order to stimulate greater interest and literacy about historical scholarship.\n\nA number of issues have also been raised by more ‘conservative’ voices\, including: \n\nConcerns about the management of evidence in fields where both digitized and non-digitized sources exist. The counter-argument is that this already happens in areas like contemporary history without there being major problems;\nAnxieties that open access and/or already digitized sources will ‘crowd out’ closed access and/or non-digitized ones\, leading to a narrowing of sources for the historical canon. Again\, this problem has not occurred in contemporary history\, and historians have strong incentives to ‘surface’ new sources and develop scholarship drawing on them; and\,\nConcerns that lack of expertise in archival research could lead to easier ‘disinformation’ usages of historical data. The counter-argument is that it is a dated ‘alchemical’ stance to seek to control knowledge by confining document-access only to ‘the initiated’. STEM sciences concern knowledge that is far more esoteric\, potentially dangerous and salient\, and scientists have evolved successful coping strategies – so too will historians (as indeed they already have for archival misuses).\n\nDr Anton Howes\, a historian of innovation\, will outline the main issues in opening up historical research\, and discuss questions with Professor Patrick Dunleavy and audience members. \nTuesday 21 November 2023    12:00-13:00CET \nRegister here

SUMMARY:CIVICA Research Open Science for the Social Sciences Seminars - Presenting Research Results Well for Maximum Openness
DESCRIPTION:Presenting Research Results Well for Maximum Openness \nAfter spending years developing projects\, collecting data and conducting analysis\, many researchers often still spend comparatively little time thinking about how they can best present their results. A legacy belief is strongly shared by some older researchers and inculcated still in ‘elite’ universities – that academic ‘results should speak for themselves’ and that spending time on producing polished charts\, graphics and tables is an unnecessary extra that undermines the seriousness of the research. \nYet how results are presented matters a great deal – first and foremost for researchers’ own understanding of what they have found. The challenge of explaining well to people unfamiliar with what has been done is a key stage in researchers really getting on top of and deep-understanding their own results. Effective data presentation smooths the path to publication and enormously enhances the citations\, academic impacts and also practical impacts of that work thereafter. It can also help inform the understanding\, reasoning and analysis of the data for both the author and their readers. \nIn the past two decades\, there have been huge leaps forward both in putting scientific research into data visualisation and the tools that researchers can use to create sophisticated and effective graphics themselves. This presentation provides an introduction to how to improve the communication of your results and achieve open social science research that is widely accessible to academic and non-academic readers alike. Presentations are also increasingly critical for the public face of research\, and increasingly shape researchers’ public reputations and career prospects. \nTuesday 14 November 2023  –  12:00-13:00CE \nRegister here

SUMMARY:CIVICA Research Eventos de Ciencia Abierta para las Ciencias Sociales - Citizen social science and opening up research
DESCRIPTION:Citizen social science and opening up research \nMost open science advocacy has focused only on opening up research to other researchers. But in the social sciences numerous different positions have advocated opening up also to our research subjects\, the people who participate in or ‘undergo’ studies\, who have their lives\, views and behaviours interpreted and often changed. We use the term ‘citizen social science’ to cover all efforts to bring the voices of non-professional stakeholders and research ‘subjects’ fully into the undertaking of research. \nThe potential gains are threefold: \n\nProducing meaningful theory and study salient topics – making research subjects co-participants from the outset in surfacing and designing questions\, and determining what is to be studied\, and how – an approach especially vital in applied research.\nImproving methodological rigour – citizens’ involvement boosts accuracy and reduces the scope for distorting researcher ‘power’ biases (otherwise very hard to appreciate or counteract). Citizen views can help in evolving measurements and indices and commenting on research findings to strengthen the robustness and replicability of research.\nSpecific normative rationales inform many participatory research approaches to developing research that is ‘co-produced’ with citizen groups – e.g. boosting encouraging reconciliation in post-conflict situations; improving individual and community capacities in development studies; ‘decolonizing’ legacy research approaches used to study colonial people and other historically disadvantaged groups; or deliberative democracy’s quest for more consensual understandings of how best to mitigate social problems or make policy choices.\n\nTuesday 7 November 2023  14:00-15:00 CET \nFor more information: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/citizen-social-science-and-opening-up-research-tickets-744036662687?aff=oddtdtcreator \nRegister here
