BORROWING RULES
The loan is personal and non-transferable.
Most of the IE University Library’s holdings are electronic. You can check them online in our catalog.
You have to self-borrow the materials in the library with DiY IEU Library APP on your own smartphone.
If you have any problem during self-borrowing, contact a librarian.
Special conditions are announced before each holiday period.
Some materials are excluded from the loan service, such as any in the Reference and Library-use only sections, printed magazines, or items indicated as such.
Items from the PhD shelf location can be taken out on loan only by PhD and DBA students, faculty, and staff.
If there is any inappropriate behavior in the library or with its materials, the Library reserves the right to block any user account, and restrict access to all the services and products the library offers. The user will be always notified in advance.

Archive materials are available, but do not have free access. However, these materials are available to you and can be requested from the library at any time, once you make a hold. If the archive item is at your library’s campus, it will be available within three days.

Renewals can be made through the “User Portal” on the library webpage or the DiY IEU Library APP on the Smart Station devices or your own smartphone.
To renew items in the library with the app, you must use your activated IE ID Card.
Consecutive renewals are allowed provided that:
- The user does not have other overdue items or fines pending.
- The material is not requested by another user.
You must return your borrowed items in the library with the DiY IE Library APP. Leave them on the trolley near the Borrow & Return station. You can also leave them in the drop boxes available.
If you do this with your own Android device, confirm your returns at the “Complete your return” point at the Smart Station.
Fines will continue to accumulate daily on all overdue items until the item is returned or is declared lost by either the borrower or the Library.
If an item is lost during your loan period or returned in poor condition, the holder will be responsible for replacing that item for the library. Please note that some items are rare or no longer in stock. Items considered as such, due to the difficulty in finding them and their high value, will be charged as double their price.
Former members of the IE Community who still have materials pending to be returned to IE Library will be excluded from all IE Library services and products indefinitely.
The User Portal is your own virtual library space. As an IE Community member, you can access it with your IE credentials (e-mail and password).
You can check your on-loan items and return dates; renew your loans and check how many renewals you have left; place and cancel holds; check for outstanding fines; check and receive your interlibrary loan requests of electronic resources; search the IE Library catalog and WorldCat—the world’s largest library catalog.

LOANS

Special conditions are announced prior to each holiday period. Library materials borrowed during the summer term will have an extended loan period and must be returned by the specified date after the vacation.
Some materials are excluded from the loan service, such as Library-use only sections, printed magazines or items indicated as such. Only PhD and DBA students, faculty, and staff are permitted to check out items from the PhD shelf area.
Our games collection is available exclusively for borrowing and returning at its original branch.
IEU Library has the right to block any user account and restrict access to any services and goods the library provides if there is any inappropriate behavior in the library or with its materials. The user will be always notified in advance.
Returning items after the due date will result in sanction days.
HOLDS
Users can reserve available or on-loan materials through the User Portal on the library catalog or the DiY IEU Library App. Search the catalog and click “Place hold“.
Users will be notified by email when the item is ready for pickup at the selected location. The item will be held for two working days (excluding weekends and holidays). After that, it will be offered to the next user in the queue or returned to the shelves.
Hold pickup locations vary by campus:
Segovia Library (Convento):
Collect your reserved items from the HOLDS trolley at the Smart Station inside the library, near the main entrance. Find the envelope with your name and self-borrow the item using the DiY IEU Library App.
María de Molina 31BIS Library:
Pick up your envelope from the trolley next to the librarian’s desk and self-borrow the item using the app.
IE Tower & Creative Campus:
Inform the librarian that you are collecting a book on hold. They will assist you. Then, self-borrow the item using the app.
All materials must be self-borrowed through the DiY IEU Library App. If you experience any issues, please contact a librarian.
Unclaimed holds will result in sanction days.
RENEWALS
Renewals can be made through the “User Portal” on the library webpage or on the DiY IEU Library APP of your own smartphone.

RETURNS
You can leave your borrowed items in the library drop boxes available in Madrid and Segovia Campuses, at the Library and at IE Tower 6th Floor (see images below).

SANCTIONS
Starting September 1, 2025, the library will implement Sanction Days for overdue items and unclaimed reservations.
During Sanction Days, your borrowing, renewing, and reserving privileges will be temporarily suspended.
Sanction Days will be applied as follows:
1. Overdue items
You will receive 1 Sanction Day for each item, for each day it is late.
Example: If you return 2 books that are 2 days late, you will receive 4 Sanction Days.
2. Unclaimed reservations
You will receive 1 Sanction Day for each reserved item that you do not pick up within the given timeframe.
Example: If you do not pick up 2 reserved books, you will receive 2 Sanction Days.
Please make sure to return or collect items on time to avoid penalties.
