Universities operate in a highly internationalised academic ecosystem which means that they compete on a global stage for academic talent, students, funding, and status.  One of the primary (and public) measures of prestige is determined by each university’s performance relative to their peers, regionally and internationally – on the various ‘Best Global Universities’ lists that are generated each year by various academic ranking systems like the CWTS Leiden Ranking, Times Higher Ed, The Shanghai Rankings, and the QS Rankings

Determining why a university is ranked as it is and setting an explicit improvement strategy can boost reputation and can ultimately increase an institution’s global visibility as it climbs the university league tables. However, not every ranking system is the same and it is important to understand the nuances of different ranking systems as they allocate different weight to various indicators and to specifically understand how those metrics present your university.
